Holiday Reflection: Good People

WHEW...the day is at it's end. I am exhausted. My daughter had a blast. Everyone was sooo kind and my family is truly blessed to be surrounded by such good people.

Here we are at the end of 2008 and I think/reflect about the year gone by and what I have experienced and learned. I feel lucky to have had the year I had, and a lot of that has to do with good people. With the love and support of my wife and daughter, they provide for me the drive and enthusiasm to do what I do every day. I'm blessed to have my "mothers", my mom, step-mom, and mother - in -law, for without them, I would struggle to get anything done. My Free Lunch partners, Steven and Steve, who push me to continue to better myself. My Free Lunch family, who share with me a common mission, hard work, professionalism and laughter through our experiences together. I'm blessed to have supporters that believe in me enough to give me the tools, experience, exposure and opportunities to succeed. Those that I mentor, individuals that share their lessons and experiences with me in exchange for the lessons I share with them. Blessed by all the children that I work with, whose energy, optimism and creativity are a true resource for me. And finally, the talented and kind people in my artist network groups, they are true role models and mentors to me and I am privileged to share experiences with. Don't think I forgot you if you are family, an Outlaw, a fan, my comic provider or my M&M supplier... For all of you, and I do mean all of you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are the driving force behind everything I do.

OK catch up time!

Last Friday, Mr Kanaras (publisher from Free Lunch Comics) and I went out to Windsor CT to visit Sage Park Middle School and we spoke to a ton of kids about the life of an indy comic. It was great and the kids were awesome. We love to do that stuff can come out to visit your school too...send an email to me at mattsminestudio@aol.com.

Saturday we had a meeting at the FLC office. I did not get much art done, but it was an effective meeting. Our newest intern, Kevin started a new blogger site where he will start taking and posting FLC photos. Check that out at: http://freelunchphotos.blogspot.com/

Today, I tweaked a couple of Granma pages and worked on a new pic for the Cliff's Cons.

Next BIGGER cover peek!

Well we just got back from the Boston Comic-con...it was awesome. The Free Lunch crew was reunited for another good time. The Soares, Mr Murphy, Mr Hayden, Mr Kuster and myself had a good ol' time at our booth. That show was packed! We made a lot of new friends and also got to hang out with our fellow CAG members. Good times.

Now on to new things. Unhappy Granma 2 will be coming soon and so will BIGGER #10. That next BIGGER might be the most important issue I have done to date. I promise...this will be BIG. Here's where I'm at with the cover...

If you're wondering what that logo is on the bottom right...I was toying with the idea of "stamping" the book cover with the honor I received at the CAG awards for production excellence.

24 Hour Comic Day

Uhhh....24 hour comic day is over...I was not able to compete. I did attend though! I was able to finish the Blood Rider artwork! I started my final run at Sarge's Comics in New London CT. Man, I gotta tell you, these guys are great. The staff running that store work so hard on making you comfortable. It's ridiculous. Go there, go there, go there. Aside from the great staff and how they support the industry it's the best damn comic store I've ever been to.

http://sargescomics.com/

I got home from there around 1 am. I got up again around 9:30 and started again. Long story short...just doing final touches tonight and tomorrow morning. Yay!

Ken Rohde
Steven Kuster

These guys came over and kept me company and we had a great old time. It was great to see some old friends and meet some new ones too. So thanks again everyone and I'll see you all later. Tired.

OK...HOLY COW...THIS IS AMAZING

Alright, I've been workin' in the studio all day...my wife (God bless her) decided to bring home three pieces of "The Cheesecake Factory" cheesecake. Now at first, just by name only, I thought this would've been a perfect snack for Mr Katz...but seriously nooooo. This stuff is bleepity blankin' spectacular! I just gotta let you know, I love sweet foods. It's my kryptonite. This was out of this world. Go. Get some. Look at my face, I'm serious.

I couldn't even finish!

Thursday Throwback!

Here's the Thursday Throwback for this week! I've been cleaning the studio a little bit each day for Open Studios. I happened to stumble on this little gem... an old invite to one of our release parties for the first limited series of BIGGER. Those things were a lot of fun. Music, food and friends...perfect.

Busy Friday

Friday's are turning out to be very, very busy. I updated my "Throwback Thursday" pic today. Shame on me. I have a mentoring gig now in the morning, then start up at the Y with "Drawn to Read", and finally end at Drawing and Painting at the FVAC. (that's where I did these two charcoal pics)

I owe you a Thursday Throwback...

Where does the week go? This pic is also from waayyy back in '96. Willie shaving. Way ahead of his time.

Ohh, I got a review!

http://comicsnexus.com/2008/09/17/advance-review-bigger-9/

That makes me very happy! Tomorrow, I'm gonna start a new theme - it's gonna be called, "Throwback Thursdays!" It'll be a fond look back at some older work from my first little sketchbooks from college. Let's see if we recognize anything...

Has this ever happened to you?

I had a great weekend. I believe we have found a great team for an upcoming job. You're gonna hate me for this but...I still gotta wait before I say too much. The second I find out more, I'll let you know. In the meantime...did you ever forget your lunch?

Now that things are in full swing...

It's tough getting used to the new schedule of studio hours, teaching hours, road hours and office hours. BUT, I still feel like I'm producing, so here's what I'm up to:

Wolf logo is DONE. It was fun and the client is very happy, that means we're happy too! Steven and I enjoyed that one.

Speaking of working together, Steven, Norman, and myself worked on a couple of jobs this week. A lot of fun, tough deadline, and I'll let you know more after the next couple of days. It's rare for all three of us to be able to work on one gig.

And finally, the blood soaked month of September continues. Blood Rider = Bad Fun. I'm starting to look at western type graphic novels for inspiration. My fav... Trio Grande: Adios Palomita from Heavy Metal. More to follow...I'll see ya soon!
