Taught our first Free Lunch Studios based Mad Science Cartooning today! What a great time! This class I've taught at other venues, like the YMCA for example, but never at the office. There's a little bit of a difference the office it's a parent/child event. This makes it so much cooler!

New York Comic Con and Open Studios

WHEW! Crazy couple of weeks have come to a close. For starters...we hosted the 24 Hour Comic Challenge again this year and you can read mine at

The New York Comic Con was a lot of fun! This was the first year that we didn't have a table in a while...and it was cool. I forgot just how big the show was. When you are behind the table, you don't see how crazy it is.

Open Studio was great. Met some returning guests and quite a few new ones. It was so busy, Each day I ate lunch at 5 or later! If you didn't get to stop can swing by tonight and every Monday night for our Monday Night Jam from 6 to 8:30.

24 Hour Comic Day approaches...

Hello fellow 24 Hour warriors! As this great event approaches, I found one creator's tips for a successful 24 hour experience. Kevin Cannon's 1st four chapters of his book, Far Arden were 24 hour comics. Sage advice.

Obviously there's no one way to draw, but here are Mr Cannon's tips:

- Have your paper ready and, if possible, pre-ruled.

- Come prepared with drawing materials.

- Bring a lamp and extension cord for direct light.

- Pace yourself. You have to carve out time for meals and bathroom breaks.

- Try doing a page every fifty minutes. That gives you 240 minutes to rest and recoup and eat.

- If you're chatty, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Don't be surprised when you end up with only 20-30 minutes to draw each page.

- Some people like to pencil the whole book and THEN ink. I HIGHLY discourage this. Try to COMPLETE a full page every hour. This lets you accurately budget your time.

- Do as little penciling as possible. Nobody's going to win an Eisner with these books, so why not jump into the inks right away?

- Bring comfort items: extra clothes, an iPod, a cushion, etc. Better to bring too much stuff on your first time.

- On the flipside, don't bring a bunch of unnecessary crap.

New Britain Museum of Modern American Art (last day)

Official last day (I should say couple hours) with Elyse as my intern and with the kids from the Studio @ 4 class. We had a great time working on our last MC Escher themed piece. It ended up being the most difficult challenge during class but I feel like the kids really grabbed hold of the concept. They were all really thankful at the end of the session and one, sweet little girl painted thank you cards and gave Elyse and I her own handmade bracelets. Pretty awesome. I'll be heading back there this coming October for classes that continue to tie in with the Escher theme.

The end of summer

Well, if you saw the last post, you saw that today was the last day of Elyse's internship. Even though it's at it's end, we'll still have a place for her at Free Lunch. While she was here, she not only completed some really nice artwork, she helped with meetings, scanning, road jobs and more. It wasn't all hard work though...we must not forget the Twin Peaks lunch breaks, nerf football golf, punchdubs, streaming soundtrack radio, Russian see saws, grape lady, foreign dignitaries, world cup football, riding bikes to work and "ghosting" (look it up). It was an honor and a pleasure to have Elyse at the office and I'm really glad that she'll be with us for the gallery, The Shuffle, workshops and more. Have a great school year and I'll miss having you around all the time.

Elyse Took Over

Hullo. I'm Elyse, the summer is coming to a close and that means I have to go to school. Which also equals no more internship with Matt at Free Lunch Studios. Until NEXT SUMMER! So, I'm going to inform you what I've been doing for the past couple months. I worked at the YMCA twice (including today), we did two different things. We did "Mad Science Cartooning" and "King of the Monster Mountain". The kids LOVED it. Also, for the past three weeks we have been traveling to The New Britain Museum of Modern American art to work with more children on impossible architecture themed pieces during the M.C. Escher exhibit. Along with traveling to all of these places I had the "pleasure" of scanning a lot of Matt's original artwork. I was put in charge of organizing a gallery event to be held at the studio, this fall. And another event is a Harry Potter themed workshop.
I learned a lot this summer, I learned a lot from Matt's lectures about why you shouldn't smoke and why the most important thing to do is be yourself. He also taught me how to digitally paint pictures in photo shop. But the greatest thing is how much fun I had. It's hard to describe it. My summer was saved by enjoying two out of the seven days at the studio.
See ya next summer,

Crazy day!

Like many of my days... I Worked on the road again today! I'm happy to say that all the pencils for the coloring book job are done! But, not without some sort of craziness...I cut my arm and bled a little on the script, got some spider guts on one of the pages after I smacked it off my wife's arm and ended up chasing the script across a mall parking lot in Danbury! The script had just an exciting adventure as the one it contained!

Elyse and I had a great time drawing with the kids at the Farmington Valley YMCA yesterday! We ended up working with 2 large, enthusiastic groups of kids (totaling at least 50). We tried a new class out called Mad Science Cartooning. It was a hit! I was happy to see a few familiar faces...Sara Longo and Kevin Hayden, two kids that used to work with me over at the YMCA. After that, it was back to the office and Drawing and Painting for Teens. The kids had a ton of energy so it was a little crazier than usual (which means I laugh a lot).

Once this project is complete, I'll be looking to resolve the next issues of Beyond the Kuiper Belt and Bigger. (Great thing is, those books are already almost done!)

Started teaching the newest sessions this past Saturday...good turnout and a good mix of age and talent. We're gonna have a lot of fun.

I'll probably touch on some quick commissions this week too. I'll let you peek at that stuff too if I can.

Not too much...

Not too much drawing done today...I was able to do a little. BUT...Elyse and I rode our bikes to Free Lunch, answered some emails, cleaned the office and went to or attended quite a few REALLY good meetings. So, for what little drawing we did do today, we made up in really good business!

She and I had a great lunch at my favorite burger joint, 5 Guys Burgers And Fries. (I love the food there!)

Classes and a Partial Page

Cartoon Anatomy is the basic 4 week course that will teach working lines and simple shapes, creating the foundation of character design, form, gesture, expression and a couple sneaky "tricks" we've learned along the way. Courses include our "Free Lunch" named after our comic company and studio. That will be pizza (purchased from our neighbors at New England Pizza (which is awesome)) and soft drinks, served before this class.

Create a finished comic strip or page in this 4 week course for the student who has finished Cartoon Anatomy. Work from a script or create your own story to work from in this exciting class. Dealing with slice of life, slapstick humor, elements of horror or the most intense action, make all of your pages works of art. Free Lunch and drink served before or after this 2 hour class.

Upcoming sessions begin: May 29th, Call and reserve a spot today!

Now for the Partial Page...but we have a problem. As you've noticed, the Partial Pages are getting smaller...I have to start being careful not to spoil anything for the actual story. I'll still keep scanning content from the pages as I resolve them. But don't worry, more big scans will be on the way soon!

4 Sessions: June 1, 8, 15, and ...22 is $75
All eight sessions: June 1, 8,15, 22, July 13, 20, 27 and Aug 3 is $120

As promised...

Just worked my last day at the Raymond Hill School in New Britian. I'm gonna miss those kids. For our last day we played a little King Of The Monster Mountain! Now it's time for some dinner and then the Monday Night Jam...

But first, here's your Partial Page! I know, I know...I'm not showing you too much. Well...stuff is starting to get interesting and you wouldn't want me to spoil the story for you, would ya?

Crazy weekend!

Got some good work done Saturday! I guess Friday was "ride your bike to work day" but there's no way I could ever do that on a Friday right now...I decided to ride my new (to me) bike to the office on Saturday....whew....easy to say, not so easy to do (yet). And yes, before you ask, I did not wimp out and call my wife for a ride home...I rode back.

Sunday Steve Kanaras and I went to the Maine Comics Art Fest. What a great show, great guests and great attendees. Here are some pics courtesy of Mr Kanaras.

I promise at least one partial page today...stay tuned!

Friday, May 21, 2010

Partial Page? You got it!

Another page done...that means you get another Partial Page! Yay for everyone, right?!

Aside from that, I'm working on "Big Project" workshops to be held at Free Lunch Studios over the summer. Tomorrow I'll be teaching a private class at Free Lunch (yeah, we do that) and the rest of the day will focus on resolving pages. Should be a good one!

If you live in New England and want to go to an awesome comic art show, you should check out the Maine Comic Arts Festival! Free Lunch did this last year and it was a great experience, so we're going back. For more info, check out:

More stuff to show...

Had a good day yesterday-actually having a pretty productive week so far. Finished another page for the Guild Works you know what that means...Partial Page! This story is coming together well.

New cartooning classes set to start at the end of May. Cartoon Anatomy and Comic Book Storytelling both start May 29th! We're also going to start a Figure Drawing session too! Check out for more info.

Holy Cow too!

Still drawin'! Yay! I was able to finish this page and now onto the next! Only partial peeks wanna see the whole thing (and I know you will) you're gonna have to buy the comic from Guild Works Publishing! Trust me, as soon as it's out, I'll let you know. Had a great meeting with Mr Kaminski (my partner on Black Roses) yesterday so I'll be peekin' some pages from that soon too! Yeah!

Holy Cow! I'm drawing!

Feel like it's been forever since I drew something! This is the first page from a zombie story that Steve Kanaras and I are working on. Free Lunch in the house! This story will be a part of a larger zombified comic that'll be coming out from Guild Works Publishing. I'll be sure to show you more peeks as I complete pages.

A great loan...

A local Connecticut cartoonist was kind enough dive into his vault to dig out and loan us here at Free Lunch Studios, TWO ultra rare, original editions of The Famous Artists Cartoon Course manuals. These beauties are chock full of awesome stuff including the talents of Milton Caniff, Rube Goldberg and more! You can come by and take a supervised gander at these gems on Monday nights during the weekly jam sessions (see for more info). Don't wait too long on this one, they're only here for a limited time!

Have I ever told you... awesome the Free Lunch Studios Monday Night Jam is? Every Monday night from 6 to 8:30, the Free Lunch Studios office in Granby CT opens its doors to the creative public to come in and draw or write anything they want. The "Jammers" come in with their stuff to either work on it more, show it off or even get feedback on it. If you don't know what to work on, Free Lunch has a healthy supply of materials for you to use to work on a project to start there. On top of all the creativity, there are also opportunities to network, roundtable discussions, projects for good causes and more! All in all, it's a great time and an even better way to start the week! Most people look forward to Mondays with dread...Jammers can't wait for 'em!
